St. Joseph Hospital Expansion

Tampa, Florida

Griffin designed and installed a dewatering system to dewater the excavation to 26 ft. below grade during construction of the expansion.

THE CHALLENGE

An engineered dewatering solution was required to lower groundwater below the proposed 26 ft. deep excavation during the Hospital expansion project. Significant loss of circulation was shown in the limestone underlying the site, which could contribute very high flows to the dewatering effort.

THE SOLUTION

Griffin designed a high-capacity deep well dewatering system to assist in the control of groundwater. Upon partial installation, Griffin performed a pump test to verify design assumptions.

The pump test showed no contribution from the underlying limestone. Due to the low permeability of the sand, the dewatering approach was modified to a perimeter wellpoint system.

GRIFFIN DIFFERENCE

Griffin tested design assumptions to verify system performance. Due to changed site conditions, Griffin modified the system during installation to achieve drawdown. The dewatering system was installed, with the new design, within the allotted contract time, allowing construction to proceed on schedule.
