Petmin Pig Iron Plant

Ashtabula, Ohio

Dewatering required for building foundations and utilities. Petmin-Ashtabula will be the home of the first facility in North America dedicated to the production of American-made Nodular Pig Iron, a niche commodity currently imported by foundries in the US metal casting sector.

THE CHALLENGE

Winter installation/operation on Lake Erie, upper fill material to jet through and a high impermeable layer at or near subgrade. Large footprint for building requires multiple pumps running.

THE SOLUTION

Griffin provided Trackpunch jetting installation of a wellpoint system around the perimeter of the foundation to the impermeable layer. Soils were fine in nature and required a sand filter pack enveloping the wellpoint screen and up to the surface to help drain layers of fill.

GRIFFIN DIFFERENCE

The equipment Griffin provided. We used multiple electric-powered wellpoint pumps (3), a diesel-powered standby pump, winterization equipment consisting of “Thawzall Ground Heating Units” with glycol lines next to the header pipe, discharge pipe and around the pumps with concrete blankets covering the piping and around the pumps. We provided local Union help to meet a stipulation in Bidding Documents to provide local labor participation.
